Spotlight
Established in 1999, Clínica de Familia La Romana is an NGO operating in the La Romana Province of the eastern Dominican Republic.
The organization started its first program in the DR aimed at preventing HIV transmission from pregnant women to their babies (also known as vertical transmission). The program was so successful that it inspired a change in national policy, which helped to reduce vertical transmission rates across the country to below 4%.
Building on this success, Clínica de Familia expanded in 2004 to open the region’s first comprehensive HIV clinic, offering care, treatment, and prevention services for men, women, and children living with HIV. Today, the clinic is one of the largest in the country and provides comprehensive services for approximately 2,500 clients living with HIV. Over the years, it has increased its scope and reach to provide services for the general public, including primary care, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, diabetes care, nutrition services, clinical and cosmetic dermatology, family planning, mental health services, laboratory and diagnostic imaging services for nearly 40,000 clients annually. Additionally, the clinic is helping to train the next generation of pediatric leaders as a host site for the David N. Pincus Global Health Fellowship.

The clinic also has a comprehensive sexuality and reproductive health education project that utilizes skilled peer and adult health educators to provide age-appropriate, medically accurate sexuality and reproductive health information for middle and high school students, as well as out-of-school youth, and facilitates their access to reproductive health services and resources. Additionally, Camp Hope and Joy, a summer camp for children with HIV, engages campers in activities that boost their confidence and self-esteem in a safe environment where they receive medical support, love, and respect.
We are honored to be in partnership with Clínica de Familia La Romana for its dedication to providing comprehensive, high-quality care to its community.
